It was founded in May of 1921 to provide financial support and relationships for and between servicewomen who returned from World War I to no benefits, unlike their male counterparts. Members were women who served with the YMCA, YWCA, Red Cross, Salvation Army, Jewish Welfare and other agencies. Among the roles they played in France were army nurses, Signal Corps girls, canteen workers, librarians and entertainers. There activities after the war included visiting soldiers in the hospital, supplying them with flowers, books and phonographs as well as arranging occasional entertainment activities.〔Preuss, Arthur A Dictionary of Secret and other Societies St. Louis: B. Herder Book Co. 1924 p.484〕 It started as local groups and then became national. Its first convention was also in 1921 and has been held every single year since, except during World War II (1942–1945). They have a magazine called ''Carry On.''
